standard specifies requirements and test methods for grading machines
for sawn timber according to DIN 4074-1 and DIN 4074-5. Th purpose
of this method is to ensure the correct operation of these grading
machines.
DIN 4074-4. 2003-06-00. ST*N. Strength grading of wood - Part 4:
Certificate of suitability for machine grading. This standard specifies
how the suitablility for machine strength grading has to be certified.
With this certification it shall be ensured that firms, which practice
machine grading according to DIN 4074-1 and DIN 4074-5, have the
required suitability.

Sawn hard wood / Note: Applies in conjunction with DIN 6779-1 and
DIN 6779-2. This standard is applicable for sawn hard wood for components,
which must be measured according to their strength. It specifies
grading characteristics and classes as a precondition for the specification
and application of calculation values for the verification of limiting
strength and usability according to DIN 1052 or Din 1074. Grading

deviations; German version EN 336:2003. This standard specifies
two classes of permitted deviations from target sizes for strutural
timber of softwood and hardwood species. It also specifies the moisture
content to be used as a reference point for the measurement of sizes,
and gives average values for changes in size due to changes in moisture
content. It is applicable to sawn and prepared sqare-edged timber
with parallel edges having sawn thickness or widths in the range
of 22 mm to 300 mm.
DIN EN 338. 2003-09-00. ST*N. Timber structures - Strength classes;
German version EN 338:2003. This standard establishes a system of
strength classes for general use in structural codes. It gives characteristic
strength and stiffness properties and density values for each class
and the rules for allocation of timber populations (i.e. combinations
of species, source and grade) to the class. This standard applies
to all softwood and hardwood timber for structural use..

products - Natural durability of solid wood - Part 1: Guide to the
principles of testing and classification of the natural durability
of wood; German version EN 350-1:1994. The document gives guidance
on methods for the determination of the natural durability of untreated
solid wood to attack by wood-destroying fungi, insects (beetles
and termites), marine organisms and the classification of the wood
species based on the results of these test methods.

lists the natural durability of solid wood for selected wood species,

purposes. It lists their relative durability to wood-destroying
funge, dry wood-destroying beetles, termites, marine organisms.
It also gives information relating to their treatability, origin,
density and sapwood width.

of characteristic values of mechanical properties and density; German
version EN 384:2004. This standard gives a method for determining
characteristic values of mechanical properties and density, for
defined populations of timber of visual/or mechanical strength grades.
A method is also given for checking the strength of a timber sample
against its designated value. The values determined is in accordance
with this standard for mechanical properties and density are suitable
for assigning grade and species to the strength classes of EN 338.
DIN EN 385. 2002-03-00. ST*N. Finger jointed structural timber -
Performance requirements and minimum production requirements; German
version EN 385:2001. This standard specifies requirements for bonded
finger joints and minimum requirements for the manufacture of cut,
interlocking, bonding finger joints in structural timber members.
Requirements are given for timber, adhesive, moisture content, cutting,
bonding and preservative treatments and flame retardent treatment.
This standard is only applicable to finger joints between timber
members of the same species type. Although most finger joints are
produced in coniferous species this standard also applies to broad
leaved species where information is available to enable them to
be satisfactorily bonded.

and glued laminated timber - Determination of some physical and
mechanical properties; German version EN 408:2003. This standard
specifies for structural timber and glued laminated timber test
methods for the determination of dimensions, moisture content, density
and conditioning of test pieces.

products - Natural durability of solid wood - Guide to the durability
requirements for wood to be used in hazard classes; German version
EN 460:1994. This document gives guidance on the selection of wood
species based on their natural durability to attack by wood-destroying
organisms for use as solid wood or as glued laminated timber (glulam)
in the hazard classes defined in EN 335-1. It does not consider
the durability characteristics of the glue used in glue laminated
timber.

This document specifies test methods for determining some mechanical
properties of commercial wood-based panel products for use in load-bearing
timber structures. These properties are intended for the calculation
of "characteristic values" for use in obtaining material design
values. For each type and grade of panel product, as defined for
example in an EN wood based panel standard, it is necessary to determine
characteristic values of mechanical properties to enable it to be
used for structural purposes. This document details the necessary
testing which may only need to be carried out once for each product,
unless there is a reason to suspect a significant change has occurred
in the properties of the product.

standard defines appearance grades for European poplars. The standard
applies to dry and green sawn timber, of thickness 15 mm up to 34
mm and of width 100 mm up to 250 mm measured in a green state. This
standard does not apply to the strength grading of structural timber.

German version EN 14251:2003. This test standard specifies test
methods for determining the following properties of structural round
timber: bending strength, modulus of elasticity in bending, the
compressive strength parallel to the grain and modulus of elasticity

defines a method of assessment of drying quality. It applies to
lots of dried sawn timber or to dried timber which has been planed
or surfaced by other means. It applies to both softwood and hardwood
with a thickness not greater than 100 mm.

The project lays down methods for the determination of characteristic
5-percentile values from test results and gives acceptance criteria

a destructive method of assessing the case hardening of a piece
of timber with reference to the distorsion measured in a slice taken
from the piece. This standard applies to sawn timber and timber
which has been planed or surfaced by other means. It applies to
both hardwood and softwood with a thickness not greater than 100
mm.
DIN EN 14544. 2002-11-00. DC*N-E. Timber structures - Strength graded
structural timber with round cross-section - Requirements; German
version prEN 14544:2002. The document lays down the requirements
for visual graded structural timber with round cross-sections, barked
or unbarked and cut on length but otherwise not machined. This standard
specifies tolerances on sizes and identifies thev chracteristics
for which, as a minimum, limits shall be given in visual grading
rules. It also proposes two grades recommended where no national
grades exist. Structural timber treated against fire or biological
attack is not covered in this standard."
