Given its allergenic properties, Nickel is subject to restrictions under the EU chemical legislation, Directive 76/769/EEC as amended by Directives Directive 94/27/EEC and Directive 2004/96/EC. This Directive states that nickel may not be used in products intended to come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin such as rivet buttons, tighteners, rivets, zippers and metal marks, when these are used in garments if the rate of nickel release from the parts is greater than 0.5µg/cm²/week; furthermore it includes provisions for coated items.
As refers to the conformity assessment procedure, methods described in European standards EN1811:1998 and EN12472:2005 should be used.
